Tasting Notes
This 100% Merlot is a vibrant garnet red with a complex nose of ripe, red berry fruit. Cherries and raspberries are dominant on the nose, followed by an alluring hint of floral notes, vanilla, spice, and cedar notes. The nose follows through on the palate with bright red fruit followed by spice, forest floor and vanilla flavours. This medium-bodied wine was matured for 15 months in first-fill French oak barrels and has firm, yet refined tannins and a long, lingering aftertaste.
In The Vineyard
The vineyard is located on the south-facing upper slopes of the Kapokberg in the Darling Hills, overlooking the icy Atlantic Ocean.
About The Harvest
The 2020 vintage saw better yields with good rainfall leading up to the harvest. Red wines stood out with immense phenolic ripeness due to long hanging times. The grapes for the Inheritance Merlot 2020 were picked from a selected block with small berries, which delivered superior, concentrated juice. To secure better phenolic ripeness on this Merlot, leaves around the bunches were removed and the crop was cut back to one bunch per shoot.
In The Cellar
Open tank fermentation on the skin took place for 14 days with regular punch downs before being pressed and barrelled. The wine was aged in first-fill 300-litre French oak barrels for 15 months before being bottled.
Only 1 400 bottles available.
